Jürg Itten - Linda Mentioned [Tonus 2009]

Jürg taking a nap

In an overwhelming haze of hissing static, one would not expect to find that the backbone of it is built upon the sounds of a contra-bass. In Jurg Itten's album 'Linda Mentioned' we find just that and even more as well. Structure and form take a step to this side creating a path based on constant juxtaposition. The elements of this juxtaposition are simple; organic and inorganic.
However, the meandering and profoundly formless nature of the piece, only serve to create complexity. The contra-bass being the organic element played by Simone Schranz and remixer Benfay who brings dense static disintegration of the bass. Jurg Itten serves as a conductor and arranger, bringing a unique vision that serves to form the completeness of the record.
The songs, titled as 'particles' sporadically jump from one another. Sometimes with no lead in, creating a thick distinction of elements. Some are conjoined '1st particle & 2nd particle remix' fade into one another seamlessly as if it were natural for static to disappear. Whilst clarity arrives with the plucking of the bass. And within the bass arrangement slowly winding heavy notes are punctuated by glistening harmonics, creating another pleasurable contrast.
Though in writing it may seem strange. The diverse elements serve to reflect on their differences, creating a strange double sided ensemble that meets in harmony, only to break away once again. A perfect soundtrack for the imagination, close your eyes and dream away.

Uwe Schmidt retrospective in a 900 copy limited edition. From acid house to electro-latin in less than a decade. The first disc with his earlier stuff might strike someone as too crass & dated (and it probably is). CD 2 is where he shines. Enjoy both in vbr0.

In Memoriam Andrey Tarkovsky [Musica Excentrica 2008] - re-up

Musica Excentrica proud to present our new compiliation [2008 new - ed.] dedicated to most impressive film-directors of XX century - Andrey Tarkovsky.
In the entire history of cinema there has never been a director, who has made such a dramatic stand for the human spirit as he did. Today, when cinema seems to have drowned in a sea of glamorized triviality, when human relationships on screen have been reduced to sexual intrigue or sloppy sentimentality, and baseness rules the day - this man appears as a lone warrior standing in the midst of this cinematic catastrophe, holding up the banner for human spirituality.
The Genius of modern Russian cinema - hailed by Ingmar Bergman as “the most important director of our time” - died an exile in Paris in December 1986.
After 22 [24 - ed.] years, passed from that year we decided to ask Kim Cascone, Astro, Violet, 833-45, Kenneth Kirschner, Astrowind, Pink Twins, Alva Noto, Nobukazu Takemura [yeah! - ed.] and Nikita Golyshev what do they think about Tarkovsky’s phenomenon. This “musical answers” [sic] are now gathered in a big compiliation, and we invite everyone to explore it

Bjorn Torske - Trobbel [Tellé 2001]

Bjørn Torske - Trøbbel [Tellé 2001]
I’ve never met Bjørn Torske (BT hereafter)… but if I ever bump heads with him, I’ll offer a firm butt-squeeze and the warmest embrace. For  a minimum of 5 minutes. Versatile does not even begin to describe the awesomeness that is BT; equally good on the chill-out room (those still exist?) and the dance-floor, he never fails to deliver his own brand of dubeardo-disco. He’s got a penchant for reverberated trills and the panoramic delay, unorthodox sound effects and samples (notice the guitar riff that smacks of Sonic Youth in Hard Trafikk among other things) but he knows just when to stop. My first encounter with his sound was through late 90s SVEK , on an evidently more housey tip. Trøbbel was the album that made me a believer, a proper showcase of BT’s spectrum. Without further ado, it’s back in the blogosphere after a long hiatus, in vbr0 (d/l link at comments).

UA - Senkou [2002]

Another Harakami post for your eyes only. To my knowledge, a proper first in the blogosphere™. Harakami  Rei produces this gem of a single  for UA who's a jpop singer with a characteristic 'haunting' vocal timbre. She's also pretty hot.

Los Sampler's - Descargas

Descargas is a collection of warped latin rhythms (artificial renderings of traditional rhythm structures like the mambo, son, and cha cha cha), performed by a fictional sampling ensemble. Lively and hilarious, multi-faceted, multi-layered, muy brillante! Using an immense host of samples (culled from atom’s vast collection of latin music) this music is thematically centred on the Cuban term “descarga” which has the double meaning of “jam session” and “discharge”. Favourites here are “La vida es llena de cables” (which takes on a traditional “son” rhythm and vocal style, concluding in a rapid explosion of sampled fretwork), the complex “Estudio en ritmo” (where a traditional vocal track rides unevenly on waves through the 7/4-5/4 times rhythm), and “Vamos con San Pedro” (another “son” reconstruction, which turns unexpectedly into an urban beatbox rhythm reminiscent of the excellent Mono Trademark, released in 1996). Filtered vocals, latin percussions, acoustic guitars, edits, cut-ups, and a cacophony of atomisms and “galletas” (short digital clicks, or, more literally, “cookies”) contribute to the very complex and careful structures on this album, the kind of digital baroque atom™ has been developing with extraordinary success in recent years. And this cover art is not to be missed. Highly recommended. [Richard di Santo]

Couldn't have said it better myself, Los Sampler's one and only LP, way ahead of its time. Produced by atom™ , aka Señor Coconut (both aliases of Uwe Schmidt - who lately decided to cash-in on his particular electro-latin sound by releasing covers of a variety of popular tunes...)
